Measuring for Vinyl Decals

Pick the right size for vans, windows, and gear.

Check your available panel space and pick a shop size that looks balanced on your van, window, or vehicle.

Why Measure First?

Our shop listings come in fixed sizes (shown in millimetres on each product). Measuring before ordering helps you:

  • Avoid overcrowding — a design that's too large dominates the panel
  • Prevent reordering — vinyl is cut to size; wrong-size returns are rarely possible
  • Plan placement — confirm the decal fits between windows, arches, and handles
  • Match proportions — small vans suit smaller designs; large panel vans can carry bigger art

Understanding Shop Size Labels

Each product lists dimensions such as 285 × 175 mm — the overall width and height of the cut design.

  • Width — left to right at the widest point
  • Height — top to bottom at the tallest point
  • Complex shapes may have empty space inside the bounding box

Pro tip: Use the size dropdown in the shop modal — each option shows price and dimensions.

Step-by-Step Measuring

Step 1: Pick your panel

Choose a smooth, flat section — see our placement guide.

Step 2: Measure width and height

  1. Measure available width at the height you plan to centre the decal
  2. Measure available height at the centre line
  3. Subtract at least 50 mm margin on each side for a balanced look

Step 3: Compare to shop sizes

Your decal should be smaller than the available area — typically 60–80% of panel width for side graphics.

Step 4: Template test

  1. Cut newspaper or cardboard to the shop dimensions
  2. Tape it to the panel and step back 5–10 metres
  3. Adjust until it looks right from the street or driveway

Sizing by Application

Small van / car

  • Side panels often suit medium designs (200–350 mm wide)
  • One feature decal per side is usually enough

Medium panel van

  • Larger walls can take 350–500 mm+ wide designs
  • Pair a large side decal with a smaller rear logo

Shop window

  • Measure the clear glass zone only — not the frame
  • Leave margin around opening hours and door handles

Laptops and merch

  • Measure the flat lid zone — ignore curved edges
  • Small designs (under 150 mm) suit personal gear
